About the Work
This exhibition explores color — a timeless element deeply rooted in Korean art and philosophy.
The work consists of six photographs inspired by the five traditional colors — black, white, red, yellow, and blue — along with jade green, a hue now widely recognized as uniquely Korean.
Color reaches our retina even before we perceive the form of an object. Before beauty or imperfection is defined, light itself arrives — and through its wavelength, all beings begin to sense and distinguish the world. Tracing beauty back to its source, this work begins with the belief that its origin lies in light.
The camera, modeled after the visual system of living beings, becomes a second artificial eye. Rather than seeking precision or realism, this series turns its gaze toward the wavelength itself — beyond shape and texture — allowing both the camera and the viewer to feel the resonance of light.
To visualize Korean color identity, I sought objects that embody its essence — from humble jade-toned ceramics to subtle contrasts of black and white, yin and yang. Each photograph aims to present color as naturally as possible, without digital manipulation, allowing tone and space to harmonize in their purest form.
The final image, Hap (), presents a vivid convergence of colors — layers and fragments merging freely into one another. The word Hap, which in Korean and East Asian philosophy signifies union and coexistence, evokes the spirit of traditional Korean art where countless hues coexist without hierarchy.
This work seeks to challenge the common perception that Korean art is defined solely by celadon, white porcelain, or monochrome painting. Throughout history, Korea has expressed a strikingly diverse spectrum of visual languages — Many of these tones have been described for centuries through distinct Korean terms, each carrying its own nuance and emotion.
Even within the image of Hap, one can perceive numerous gradations — crimson, scarlet, rouge, vermilion, rose red, and cinnabar — interlacing like a living palette. This plurality of color reflects not only aesthetic abundance, but also the Korean sensibility of embracing difference through harmony — an art of coexistence embodied in light itself.
이번 전시에서는 사진을 통하여 오래전부터 전통적으로 한국의 예술에서 사용된 ‘색’에 대해 주목하는 작업을 하였습니다. 기본 오방색 - 흑, 백, 적, 황, 청 - 과 함께 근래 가장 한국적인 색으로 인지되는 ‘옥’색을 추가하여 총 6개의 사진으로 구현하였습니다.
색은 우리의 인지 체계에서 사물을 구분하기도 전에, 망막으로 처음 도달하는 빛의 파장에 따라 인지되는 잔상의 분류 체계입니다. 사물의 외형에서 비롯되는 아름다움 - 혹은 추함 - 을 의식하기 전에, 우리는 피사체로부터 반사되어 도달하는 빛을 받아들이는 것부터 시작합니다. 그 파장의 존재로 인해 인간을 비롯한 모든 동물들은 만물을 지각하고 그 속에서 존재를 인식하며 모든 것을 구분 짓기 시작했습니다. 아름다움을 거슬러 올라가면, 그 근원은 빛에 있지 않을까 하는 상상과 함께 이 작업을 시작하였습니다.
카메라는 인간을 포함한 동물의 시각 체계를 본떠서 만든 발명품입니다. 피사체를 온전하게 담아내고, 이를 이미지로 보관하기 위해 우리는 우리의 눈앞에 또 하나의 인공적인 눈을 하나 더 작동시키는 모양새가 되었습니다. 그렇기 때문에 카메라는 이미지(사진)를 보다 정교하고, 사실적이며, 편집 및 재가공이 용이한 형태로 저장하는 것이 굉장히 중요해졌습니다. 하지만 카메라에게 대상의 정교한 외형과 질감이 아닌, 색 그 자체 - 파장 그 자체에 주목하게 하면 어떨지 궁금해졌습니다. 이번 작업은 카메라에게도, 그리고 우리의 시각 체계에도 대상이 가지고 있는 온전한 고유의 파장을 전하고 느낄 수 있도록 하였습니다.
한국적인 색을 나름대로 정의하고 이미지로 담아내기 위해, 저는 한국적이라고 여겨지는 피사체를 찾아다녔습니다. 특히 옥의 색을 구현하기 위해 촌스럽기까지 한 옥색의 도자기를 찾기도 하였고, 흑백을 구현할 때에는 흑과 백을 나타내는 두 피사체가 이질적이지도 않으면서 음양의 대비를 선명하게, 하지만 부드럽게 구현할 수 있기를 바랐습니다. 청, 황, 적의 색상 역시 보정 작업을 거치지 않아도 한국적인 톤과 나머지 여백이 있는 그대로 잘 조응할 수 있기를 바랐습니다.
마지막 이미지인 ‘합’은 여러 가지 색이 뒤섞인 모양입니다. 한국적인, 혹은 동양적인 글자이기도 한 ‘합’은 가지각색이 자유자재로 뒤섞어 노니는 한국 전통 예술을 떠올리며 추가하였습니다. 흔히 ‘청자’ ‘백자’ 혹은 단색화로 국한되어 있는 한국의 전통/근현대 미술에 대한 고정관념을 어느 정도 해소하기 위한 작업입니다. 예부터 한국은 시대에 따라 또렷이 구분할 수 있을 만큼의 다양한 미술과 공예들을 선보이고 있습니다. 생각보다 많은 색들이 고유한 한국의 언어로 예전부터 표기되었고, 사용되어 왔습니다. ‘합’이라는 이미지에서 관찰할 수 있는 색상만 해도 적색, 홍색, 연지색, 선홍색, 장단색 등 다양하게 구분이 가능합니다.
한국의 아름다움을 타지에서 선보이기 위한 전시를 계획하면서, 인류가 보편적으로 인지를 할 수 있는 색 자체를 한국의 언어로 표현하는 것이 여러 문화 속에서의 공감을 형성할 수 있는 형태라 생각했습니다. 그리고 그 마무리에 ‘합’을 두면서, 예로부터 온갖 색채의 조화, 나아가 공동체적 삶의 방식에서 강조되었던 합일에서 비롯된 한국의 정체성을 어쩌면 가장 자유로운 언어라 할 수 있는 빛으로 이야기하려고 합니다. 이번 작업을 통해 관람객들은 렌즈 너머에 있는 피사체를 자유롭게 상상해 보기도 하고, 색의 감정 자체를 새롭게 인지하는 계기가 되었으면 합니다. 더 나아가 한국을 처음 접하는 이들에게는 한국의 단면을 다채롭게 감각해 보는 기회로 이어졌으면 좋겠습니다.
